About the The Corporation of the Municipality of Sioux Lookout
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout was incorporated in 1912. The community was settled as a divisional point on the Lake Superior Junction Railway and the Grand Trunk Railway. Over the years, it has benefited from the railway (now CN Rail), the forest industry, tourism, government agencies, the air force, transportation and communications. More recently, in addition to the traditional economic sectors, First Nations governance, health care, social services, education, information technology, culture and recreation have increasingly played an important role in our growing and expanding economy. Approximately 5,500 residents call Sioux Lookout home with another 32,000 First Nations people living north of the community. Sioux Lookout is located in Northwestern Ontario, approximately 400 km northwest of Thunder Bay, Ontario, (a 4-5 hour drive), 450 km east of Winnipeg, Manitoba, (a 4-5 hour drive), approximately 65 km north of the TransCanada Highway (Highway 17), and accessible via Highway 72. The Municipality also owns and operates its own airport, which serves as a hub for northern First Nations communities, and having connecting flights through Thunder Bay and Winnipeg.
